چکیده
We present optical and infrared spectra of SN 1999ex, which are characterized by the lack of strong hydrogen lines, weak optical He I lines, and strong He I λ10830,20581. SN 1999ex provides a clear example of an intermediate case between pure Ib and Ic supernovae, which suggests a continuous spectroscopic sequence between SNe Ic to SNe Ib. Our UBV RIz photometric observations of SN 1999ex started only one day after explosion, which permitted us to witness an elusive transient cooling phase that lasted 4 days. The initial cooling and subsequent heating due to Ni→Co→Fe produced a dip in the lightcurve which is consistent with explosion models involving core collapse of evolved massive helium stars, and not consistent with lightcurves resulting from the thermonuclear runaway of compact white dwarfs.

We discuss the possible connection between supernova explosions (SN) and gamma-ray bursters (GRB) from the perspective of our current understanding of SN physics. Recent evidence strongly suggests that the explosion mechanism of core collapse SN is intrinsically aspherical. Typically, a neutron star is formed. However, the observed properties of the expanding SN envelopes remnants make these ob...

The attempt to secure conclusive, spectroscopic evidence for the GRB/SN connection has been a central theme in most GRB observing time proposals since the discovery of the very unusual GRB 980425 associated with the peculiar type Ib/c SN 1998bw. GRB 030329 provided this evidence to everybody’s satisfaction. In this contribution we show the results of a spectroscopic campaign of the supernova as...

We review the existing set of optical/UV/IR observations of Supernova 1993J, concentrating heavily on optical data because these are by far the most plentiful. Some results from theoretical modeling of the observations are also discussed. SN 1993J has provided the best observational evidence for the transformation of a SN from one spectral type to another, thereby providing a link between Type ...
